A Practical and Human Approach to Hypnotherapy

Hi, I am Daryl. I am a clinical hypnotherapist and hypnotherapy trainer based in Auckland.

My approach is practical, respectful and tailored to the individual. I take time to understand what you want to change, explain the process clearly and choose an approach that suits you rather than treating every person in exactly the same way.

I have worked in the natural health industry for 23 years and have completed training in clinical hypnotherapy, natural medicine and related areas. I also teach through the Integrative Hypnotherapy Institute. If you are interested in becoming a hypnotherapist, you can learn more about my Professional Hypnotherapy Training.

What Can Clinical Hypnotherapy Help With?

People consider hypnotherapy for many different reasons. The right approach depends on the person, the pattern they want to change and what they would like to achieve.

  • Confidence and self-belief
  • Motivation and personal development
  • Stress management and relaxation
  • Unwanted habits and patterns
  • Food-related habits and cravings
  • Smoking and alcohol reduction
  • Fears, phobias and performance blocks
  • Sleep support
  • Behaviour change

Every person is different, so the first step is simply to talk through what you are experiencing and what you would like to be different.

What Is Clinical Hypnotherapy?

Clinical hypnotherapy uses hypnosis within a structured therapeutic conversation to help you work with thoughts, responses and patterns in a different way.

During hypnosis, you remain aware, involved and able to make your own choices. It is not about losing control or being made to do something against your will. The process is collaborative, and the session is adapted to your goals and the way you respond best.

Many people describe hypnosis as a calm, focused state where they can pay closer attention to the ideas, images and changes they want to work with.

Clinical Hypnotherapy Auckland FAQs

What is hypnotherapy?
Hypnotherapy draws from a range of approaches, with focused attention being one of its key components. I also describe it as involving a willingness to engage with the process and temporarily suspend disbelief.

In my work, I use hypnotherapy to help people explore unconscious patterns, beliefs and the way they see themselves, with the aim of supporting meaningful personal change.

How does hypnotherapy work?
How does hypnotherapy work? When you relax and focus your attention, it can become easier to quiet some of the conscious analysis and criticism that may normally get in the way.

We can then work with positive suggestions and imagery that we have agreed upon together. For example, if part of you keeps saying, “I cannot do that,” we might use hypnosis to help you imagine yourself approaching the situation differently and strengthen more helpful beliefs and responses.

Is hypnotherapy safe?
For most people, hypnotherapy is a gentle process involving focused attention, relaxation, imagination and slower breathing.

There are circumstances where hypnotherapy may not be appropriate. If you have epilepsy, a severe mental health condition, or another health condition that may affect whether hypnotherapy is suitable for you, I recommend discussing it with your GP or appropriate registered health professional first.

Will I lose control during hypnosis?
You remain in control during hypnotherapy.

Before we begin, we talk about what you want to work on and agree on the direction of the session. The suggestions I use are based on those goals.

Hypnotherapy is a collaborative process. It does not give a hypnotherapist control over another person's mind.

Will I go unconscious during hypnosis?
Most people do not become unconscious during hypnotherapy.

You may become deeply relaxed and absorbed in the experience, and sometimes it can feel as though you have lost track of time or do not remember every detail afterwards. I often compare this to becoming absorbed in a daydream.

You are usually still conscious and able to respond throughout the experience.

Does hypnotherapy actually work?
There is no single answer that applies to everyone. The experience can depend on what you are using hypnotherapy for, your motivation and commitment, the number of sessions, the practitioner you work with and the rapport between you.

Through my years of working with clients and training hypnotherapists, I have seen people use hypnosis for many different forms of personal and behavioural change. I prefer to look at the individual, what they would like to achieve and whether hypnotherapy is an appropriate approach for them.

What issues can hypnotherapy help with?
People come to hypnotherapy for many different reasons. In my practice, I work within a wellness and personal development framework, with areas such as motivation, confidence, self-esteem, relaxation, habits, patterns and personal change.

What is appropriate depends on the individual and what they would like to achieve, so the best place to begin is usually a conversation about what is happening for you and what you would like to be different.

How many sessions will I need?
Everyone is different, so the number of sessions depends on what you would like to work on, how long the pattern has been present, what you have already tried, your expectations and how you respond to the process.

I also consider how much time you can give to practising the resources and techniques I provide between sessions.

As a general guide, I often suggest that between two and twelve sessions may be appropriate for many of the areas I work with. Once we have talked about what you would like to achieve, I can give you a clearer idea of what I would recommend for you.

What does a typical hypnotherapy session involve?
We usually begin by talking.

I want to understand you, what you would like to change, what motivates you and the kinds of language and imagery that are meaningful to you. Building rapport is important because hypnotherapy is more personal than simply taking notes and ticking boxes.

During our conversation, I may also use reframing, conversational hypnosis and other techniques. Formal hypnosis generally comes later in the session and may last around 15 minutes, sometimes shorter and often longer.

I also usually record the hypnosis portion so you can listen to it again at home.

Can anyone be hypnotised?
Most people can experience hypnosis when they are willing to participate.

The process involves narrowing and focusing your attention while allowing yourself to relax, similar in some ways to the natural transition towards sleep. You can resist the process if you choose to, which is another reason your willingness to engage is important.

▶ Watch Daryl answer: Can anyone be hypnotised?
Is hypnotherapy suitable for everyone?
Hypnotherapy works best when someone genuinely wants to participate and is open to making a change.

There are also some mental health and health circumstances where hypnotherapy may not be appropriate, or where it should only be considered alongside advice from an appropriate registered health professional.

If you are unsure whether hypnotherapy is suitable for you, we can discuss your situation before you decide whether to proceed.

▶ Watch Daryl answer: Is hypnotherapy suitable for everyone?
Do you offer online hypnotherapy sessions?
Yes. I offer both in-person sessions in Auckland and online hypnotherapy sessions, so you can work with me from elsewhere in New Zealand or internationally.
Where are you based?
I am based in Whenuapai, Auckland. In-person sessions are available by appointment, and online sessions are also available for people outside Auckland.
